Water damagecan be a stressful, problematic home occurrence. In no time at all, you can have a far-reaching situation that requires intensive cleanup, mold inspections, and advanced renovations. This sounds like it has the potential to be very costly, and depending on a multitude a factors, including lack of ability for insurance to help, it may be an expensive ordeal. While there is no exact, flat cost for every water damage restoration project, here are some guidelinesto help you approximate what the cost of your water damage restoration project may be.

When examining standing water, experts divide water damage into three categories: clean, grey, or black. These classifications are based upon contamination level, and will influence cost due to the extra care that has to be taken when cleaning up. Clean water is ideal because it likely came from your home’s water supply; it is purified and you only have to worry about the area being thoroughly dried and dehumidified to prevent mold growth. Grey water is only slightly contaminated by professional standards; it could include water from an appliance leak containing detergent. Black water is the worst because it is typically caused by either a natural disaster or a sewer backup. As such, it is full of hazardous materials that may include waste, bacteria, chemicals, pesticides, and the like, and will need thorough disinfection on top of everything else. This will be the most expensive type of water damage to fix.

The Class of the Damage

Professionals also break down water damage into classes based upon the extent of the damage. There are four classes, which range from least to most severe. A class 1 case will only have a small section of a room affected by a water leak or spill of some kind. It will likely be the cheapest fix. Class 2 is when an entire room is affected, but it is still isolated to that one room for cleanup and repairs. Class 3 means that multiple areas have been affected – ceilings, flooring, walls, and more. Class 4 is the most extreme and most wide ranging; there has been full-on saturation, which needs to be cleaned up as soon as possible to stop further deterioration. A class 4 will be the most expensive situation to repair.

A Rough Breakdown

Cleaning and repairing are two different costs. HomeAdvisor suggests that you should expect to pay between $3.75 to $7 on cleanup of a space, which, again, varies completely on the extent of the damage and the type of the water. For repairs, here are estimates on the various areas of your home if they are affected:

  • Ceiling and roof repairs: $800
  • Drywall repairs: $500
  • Flooring: $350
  • Burst pipes: $1,000
  • Basement flooding: $1,500
  • Broken bathroom fixtures: $3,000
